HOMESTAKE MINING COMPANY

HOMESTAKE ALERT!

ALL ENGELHARD has recently confirmed that all of the smaller weight class
Homestake ingots that began surfacing in 2009 are counterfeit. We questioned the authenticity of these pieces after having completed a sizable purchase and have worked with many advanced collectors to obtain dozens of recently purchased ingots for authentication and ‘REPLICA’ stamping.  We were also successful in ensuring that all known purchases from one single seller were refunded and made whole.  These counterfeit ingots include ‘prototype’ or ‘blem’ smaller weight class pieces that include both the standard silver hallmark, the large ‘Gold Hallmark’ as well as all kilo and 20oz weight class from the 1970’s that demonstrate the ‘Gold Hallmark’ stamp.  There is much more to come on these counterfeit examples and we will be providing a page dedicated to defining each of these variety, to include photos of all known counterfeit ingots.

Meanwhile, we are posting photos of several known counterfeit examples for immediate reference.  We are also including photos of the modern, period-incorrect hallmark stamps, all of which have been confiscated by All Engelhard and effectively cancelled. Please note that there are many more counterfeit ingots than are pictured below and we will be displaying all known examples in the near future for community reference. Genuine Homestake Mining Company ingots are defined further down on this page.

Much to their credit, midpacificgoldnsilver immediately suspected these smaller weight class ingots as reproductions when they began surfacing in 2009.  They called it and All Engelhard remains appreciative of their continued wise counsel.

ALL ENGELHARD is pleased to welcome visitors to our Homestake Mining Company Definitive Page. The Homestake Mining Company took its name from its famous mine located in South Dakota, and was one of the world’s most prolific and longest operating gold mines, producing an estimated 39.8 million troy ounces of gold and 9 million troy ounces of silver during its 123 years of operation, from 1878 to 2001.  Homestake Mining Company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange longer than any other company.  Shares were traded on NYSE from 1879 until the company was delisted after being acquired by Canadian gold producer Barrick Gold Corporation in 2002.  Homestake Mining Company produced bullion ingots for retail sale only for a very short span, as noted below, and is one of very few refiners who dated their ingots along with a serial number.

While our focus is clearly Engelhard, we recognize that many Engelhard bullion collectors also collect Homestake Mining Company bars and ingots. As such, we appreciate the opportunity to present information on the specific varieties below and look forward to your thoughts and input!

Please note the serial numbers presented below are sourced from our archives.  As always, collectors are encouraged to provide us any additional numbers they have as we continue to fine tune our mintage estimates.  The examples defined below are genuine Homestake Mining Company ingots.
