DESCRIPTION:
1894 - 1st Stanley Cup Won by Montreal A.A.A.

The Stanley Cup, oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, was first placed in competition in 1893, the year hockey was introduced in the United States at Yale University and John Hopkins University.

The Cup was donated by Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston. He purchased the trophy for about $50 for presentation to the amateur hockey champions of Canada.

The first winner was the Montreal A.A.A. (in 1894). Since 1920 when the National Hockey Association took possession of the Stanley Cup, it has been the symbol of professional hockey supremacy.

Engelhard produced the Commemorative Sports Series of bars in 1980, in mintage of 5000 sets.
