1903 - 1st World Series - Boston vs. Pittsburg

The first modern World Series was won by the Boston Americans over the Pittsburgh rivals of the National League, 5 games to 3.Total attendance for the 8 games was slightly more than 100,000 and receipts, about $50,000.

The first World Series resulted from a challenge exchanged between the rival managers. The following year, bitterness toward the "upstart" American League led owner, John T. Brush, and manager, John J. McGraw, to refuse to let their National League pennant-winning Giants meet the repeating American League winners. It was not until 1905 that the Series resumed under regulations, drawn up by John T. Brush, that are still used today, with few exceptions.

Engelhard produced the Commemorative Sports Series of bars in 1980, in mintage of 5000 sets.
