 ENGELHARD

is pleased to welcome visitors to our Cascade Refining, Inc. Definitive Page.  While our focus is clearly Engelhard, we recognize that many Engelhard bullion collectors also collect other bars and ingots. As such, we appreciate the opportunity to present additional collections and look forward to your thoughts and input!

Cascade Refining, Inc. of Layton, Utah formed in 1974, and is known for its beautiful poured silver ingots in approximate 5oz, 7oz, 10oz, 25oz and 100oz weight.  Unlike many refiners who stamped a progressive serial number on their ingots, Cascade Refining stamped a 6-digit number (and occasionally 5-digit) that indicated the date of production, i.e. 012381, indicating January 23, 1981.  From our serial registry, we have concluded that Cascade Refining had approximately 5-6 production dates per year from 1980 through 1984, with less frequent dates in 1979 and 1985 through 1989.  In all, we estimate total Cascade Refining poured ingot production at less than 4,500 ingots.  Although multiple examples have been recorded with the same date stamps, all are of different weight class.   On at least four different production dates, Cascade Refining assigned a letter suffix of B, C, D, E, etc. to identify multiple examples produced on the same day in the same weight class. An example of ingots 060480B and 021181E are shown below in the 25oz category.  We have come across two ingot examples with “Lot#” serial numbers shown below in 25oz and 100oz class that do not appear to reference production date, and we are researching this at this time.  Cascade Refining, Inc. is still operating today, and producing 1oz silver rounds, in addition to being a large regional bullion dealer in Utah.  We hope you enjoy this entry, as these old poured hand stamped ingots are very rare and seldom seen today, and they truly elicit the essence of vintage collectible bullion.  Please let us know if you have any additional information that would be beneficial to this page.

Evidence indicates 1980+/- production period.  Although  serial number assignment for this variation is in  standard Cascade Refining six-digit format, the production date association remains inconclusive at this time.  All ingot serial numbers beginning with a ’10’ denoting 10oz class, and we believe the  four numbers following thereafter denote serial number.
