This page contains our current information on 1oz Engelhard silver bars and Legacy Ingots. Engelhard 1oz bars are, in general, the most common and available of all Engelhard sizes produced. With total production at a relatively limited 4 million units, 1oz Engelhard bars are the ideal choice for investors looking to secure desirable hallmark bullion as well as a collectible piece of Engelhard history.
While 4 million units over a span of two decades may seem like healthy production, it is important to note the ‘ultra rare’ 1996 US Silver Eagle had a production run of just over 3.6 million rounds in its most limited production year, currently commanding upward of 3x spot price. Unlike the 1996 US Silver Eagle, a meaningful percentage of these 1oz Engelhard bars were melted during the 1979/1980 silver spike. When comparing the relatively short 4,000,000+/- 1oz Engelhard bar run with the continuously increasing 525,000,000+ to-date production US Silver Eagles, it is easy to recognize why many bullion investors and collectors continue to invest in these 1oz Engelhard bars. Imagine, more US Silver Eagles are produced in a single month than the entire Engelhard 1 oz bar production ever. If that isn’t a compelling argument to pursue every last 1oz Engelhard bar on the planet at today’s prices, we don’t know what is!
Presented below, we define all currently known varieties with pictures, serial numbers and mintage estimates. There are surely a few more we haven’t encountered yet, and we welcome collectors to share any new discoveries. We hope you enjoy your visit!

N/A | N/A | [1.000] [999+] [Hallmark in Elongated Octagon] [Serial Number] | Blank, without a border. | Produced in the late 1960’s, this is the earliest known variety of 1oz Engelhard production bar. The examples we’ve observed demonstrate a faint ‘X8’ over-stamp to the left of serial number. The serial number errors on these pieces resulted from part of the letter ‘X’ and number ‘8’ that were used as fillers for the lead position on the rotary stamp. These leading fillers slipped out of position just enough to leave an impression of the bottom or top half of the letter and number, see our recent article ‘THE X8 FACTOR‘ for additional information. Bar 10038 sold privately on August 12, 2016 for $2,500.00. Bar 10088 sold privately on July 28, 2017 for $2,750.00. Bar 10023 sold via eBay auction on May 2, 2021 for $2,555.99. EI-1 | Engelhard Industries of Canada | [‘ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES OF CANADA LTD.’ in Elongated Octagon] [REFINERS & ASSAYERS] [1oz. troy SILVER 999 fine] [Serial Number] | Blank, without a border. | Introduced in 1968 with production through early 1970’s. Note that this variety lacks the traditional Canadian ‘Bull’ Hallmark. Around the 75000 serial mark, the text above serial stamp denoting weight, metal and purity changed to a smaller font with more spacing, most evident is the smaller SILVER at center. | 05972 13762 38915 41395 43090 44176 44645 45734 60942 72492 76891 | <17,500 MINTAGE

This particular variety demonstrates an ‘A’ serial prefix, likely a prototype piece. | A 89049 A 89261 A 89309 | <100 MINTAGE
N/A | Engelhard Industries of Canada | [ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES OF CANADA LTD.] [REFINERS & ASSAYERS] [1 oz troy SILVER 999 fine] [Serial Number] [Bull Hallmark] | Blank, without a border. | Similar to above example, but with 5-digit serial assignment without letter prefix. | 86284 89936 92031 92960 93344 97875 99123 | <1,000 MINTAGE

N/A | Art Bar | Serial Absent | [IMPEX Hallmark and Bow Tie Log] [1 TROY OZ.] [.999 FINE SILVER] | [Custom L Hallmark in Box] [IMPEX METALS CORPORATION][THE SILVER SPECIALISTS] | Believed to have been produced by Engelhard from 1975 to 1980 for IMPEX Metals Corporation. Please see our entry for the second variety of IMPEX 1oz silver art bar that demonstrates the IMPEX hallmark repeated diagonally on the reverse. It may be found six entries below this variety. | N/A | <100 MINTAGE
EI-1A | Art Bar | Blank Reverse | Serial Absent | [Hallmark in Elongated Octagon] [1 TROY OZ.] [.999 FINE SILVER] | Blank, with a border. | Believed to have been produced from 1975 to 1980. Note that the Engelhard logo is slightly different than on other varieties. The left and right sides of the rectangle are longer, and this appears to be the first Engelhard logo, and the ‘H’ and ‘A’ are noticeably wider. Note this variety has the ‘1’ in weight designation centered above the space between ‘.999′ and ‘FINE SILVER’. | N/A | <25,000 MINTAGE
EI-1A | Art Bar | Frosted Reverse | Serial Absent | [Hallmark in Elongated Octagon] [1 TROY OZ.] [.999 FINE SILVER] | Blank, with a border. | Believed to have been produced from 1975 to 1980, similar to our above example though demonstrates a pebbled finish on the reverse. | N/A | <10,000 MINTAGE

Some of these have the original logo, as pictured here. Others have the revised logo with the shorter left/right sides and more space between the letters. Apparently, few survived melting. Note that some have a single letter prefix [‘P’] and some have a space between the prefix and the numbers [e.g. ‘P 59250′]. - Most Engelhard 1-ounce silver bars have serial numbers (two do not, but are otherwise identical to other bars). The bars without serial numbers should be considered art bars.
- Most have serial numbers beginning with 2 letters (the first being ‘F’ or ‘P’). The exceptions that 2 varieties that are just numbers, and bars with a ‘P’ with no other letter.
- Most have serial numbers ending in 5 numbers. The exceptions are some that have no letter prefixes, and ‘PB’ (which have 6 digits)
- In most cases, it seems that when the numbers reach ‘99999’, the 2nd letter is increased (e.g. after FA99999 is created, FB00000 or FB00001 is created).
- There is at least one case where two designs appear to share the same prefix (FB seems to be shared by two designs)
- There is at least one case where one design has serial numbers beginning with both ‘F’ and ‘P’ (the ‘Wide ‘E’ centered, with FA, FB, PX, and PZ).
- We count about 45 different prefixes as well as the no-prefix 5 digit.
