Sharps Pixley, Ltd. – Est. 1778

William Sharp founded a diamond brokerage in 1778 at 32 Winchester Street, London. The company began bullion brokering in 1811, with Mexican silver being their main commodity.

Sharps & Wilkins was formed in 1847, shortly before the death of James Sharp. Frederick Charles Wilkins at the helm, the firm heavily pursued opportunities in California during the Gold Rush in 1849 and then Australia in 1851.

Stewart Pixley began a bullion partnership in 1857 with Henry Haggard. Haggard left the brokerage in 1929 and Pixley took Henry Gibson Abell as his partner in 1872, founding Pixley & Abell.

Pixley was a competitive rival in the bullion business, cornering the majority of gold bars out of India during the late 1800’s. He further focused on United States produced silver, pursuing mining operations in Montana.

Sharps & Wilkins merged with Pixley & Abell in 1957 to form Sharps Pixley. The firm remained in the London Gold Fixing operation and today maintains a major position in international gold trade.
