1891 - Basketball Invented in Springfield, Mass.
Basketball is a truly American invention. In the winter of 1891, Dr. James A. Naismith, an instructor at what is now Springfield College in Massachusetts, fastened two peach baskets to a gymnasium balcony.
Twelve of the 13 rules he laid down are still fundamental to the game although the rules were not standardized until 1934. From its humble beginnings, basketball has spread to many parts of the world and grown in popularity to the point where today it probably attracts more fans than any other sport.
Engelhard produced the Commemorative Sports Series of bars in 1980, in mintage of 5000 sets.
