Hot air balloonist, Maxie Anderson, founded Ranchers Exploration & Development Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1954. Ranchers Exploration innovated a vertical extraction technology called Vertical Crater Retreat. Ranchers Exploration operated Escalante Mine in Southern Utah as well as Old Reliable Mine by Copper Creek, Arizona.
Hecla Mining Company and Sunshine Mining Company entered a takeover bid to Acquire Ranchers Exploration in 1984. Hecla Mining Company prevailed and closed the Escalante Mine in December 1988.
