United Refining & Smelting Company – Est. 1950
United Refining & Smelting Company of Franklin Park, Illinois served as a full service, secondary refiner of precious metals, including gold, silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium. They were acquired by Diversified Industries, Inc. in 1968 and then merged with Sims Recycling Solutions in 2007. United Refining & Smelting Company is known today as Sims Recycling Solutions, the world’s largest electronic recycler.
We believe Engelhard produced these bars in 3oz, 5oz and 10oz weight class, in 1000 mintage per ingot and applied weight class, purity and serial number stampings. United Refining & Smelting Company applied the hallmark stampings post-production. United’s acquisition of these bars from Engelhard was under the direction of Al Payne, president of United at the time.
